Bird watching safari in Rwanda

Upon your arrival at Kigali international airport, you will find our drive guide waiting for you outside at the arrivals holding a poster bearing the company name for easy identification. After meeting him, he will drive you to Marriott hotel in Kigali where you will spend the evening while preparing yourself for tomorrows activity.

After having your morning breakfast at your hotel, you will set off for Akagera national park which is located in the eastern part of Rwanda bordering Tanzania. Here in Akagera national park, you will start your birding safari in marshy areas searching for different bird species such as veillots black weavers, black headed weavers, long chested Eagle and pied crow, Augur buzzard, sacred and hadada ibis, Hamerkop, Cattle Egret etc. In the evening, you will drive to your lodge and check in for the night while preparing for the following day bird safari. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game lodge.

These 2 days you will spend them in Akagera national park watching birds and remember that the park is known for having over 500 bird species. During the morning time, you will bird in the savannah and also woodland areas for different bird species such as Red faced barbet, Pearl spotted owlet, Brown snake Eagle, Shouldered Robin chat etc. During the afternoon time, you will have a boat ride on lake Ihema to spot other bird species such as the Black tern, Pied and Malachite kingfishers, Water thick knee, African Darter, African open bill, Grey crowned crane, Little bittern, Squaco Herons etc. After the boat ride, you be able to encounter herds of buffaloes, impalas, zebras, lions, water bucks, elephants etc.

After having your morning breakfast, you will start your journey to Nyungwe national park and during the journey, you will visit the swampy marshes and papyrus to search for Grauers swamp warbler, papyrus Gonolek, papyrus canary, White winged warbler before reaching to your lodge. Dinner and overnight at Nyungwe Nziza Ecolodge.

Spend two days in Nyungwe forest, known for its Albertine Rift Endemics. Search for bird species like Purple breasted and Sunbirds, White-tailed blue flycatcher, Neumann’s short-tailed warbler, Rwenzori Batis, Black-faced and collared Apalises, Mountain masked, Doherty bush Shrike, Archers Robin chat, and Red collared Babbler. Overnight at Nyungwe Nziza Ecolodge.

Enjoy two days of bird watching around Lake Kivu. The journey takes you through marshes, forested areas, and agricultural areas with several stopovers. You'll have a boat ride on the lake's shores. Check in at Ruzizi Tented Lodge.

After having your morning breakfast, you will start your journey back to Kigali and on your arrival to the city, you will be transferred to the airport to take your flight back home to meet your family and that ends the 10 days bird safari in Rwanda.
